I know some of us talked about generating an organizer for the argument paper to emphasize the structure of argument as an analysis of two claims and a conclusion drawn from research.
Here’s Jim Burke’s argument organizer, which may work for some of you.
My suggestion would be that students fill out 2 of these (one for each side of the argument) and use it to help them draw conclusions based on research. If you copy them on separate pieces of paper, students can put them side-by-side and evaluate the stronger side.
I think this could be really effective if it’s first teacher modeled with research (both the filling out first and the evaluating second).
Just a thought!
